Raising Teenage Boys with Sarcastic Mommy Lisa Munn

by Chris Cate

This week, Lisa Munn, a mom of four boys known to hundreds of thousands of followers on social media as Sarcastic Mommy, joins me to talk about the art of raising teenage boys.

In our conversation, we discuss how to talk to teen boys about relationships, acceptable social media use for teens, teen driving, disciplining teen boys, searching for colleges and much more. Lisa also shares how she got her start on social media and built a huge following of parents online.

Here’s just a sampling of Lisa’s funny insights into parenting:

I put my symptoms into WebMD & it turns out I just have kids.

— Sarcastic Mommy (@sarcasticmommy4) March 7, 2016

I keep hearing it takes a village to raise a child. Do they just show up or is there a number to call?

It’s been 22 years. I think they can’t find me.

— Sarcastic Mommy (@sarcasticmommy4) October 27, 2019

Before I had kids, I didn’t know you could ruin someone’s day by saying, “Put your shoes on, please.”

— Sarcastic Mommy (@sarcasticmommy4) October 23, 2019

Welcome to parenthood.

You have a favorite closet to hide & eat your snacks in now.

— Sarcastic Mommy (@sarcasticmommy4) February 23, 2019

A fun thing about having teens home during summer break is that they only require 2 meals a day because they don’t wake up until lunch.

About Breaking Down Parenting: A ParentNormal Podcast

Breaking Down Parenting: A ParentNormal Podcast is a show that’s for imperfect parents by imperfect parents. Hosted by humorist and imperfect parent of three Chris Cate, every episode breaks down a topic that causes parents to break down, such as putting kids to bed, potty training, the terrible twos, homework, clothing, discipline, cleaning up, cooking for kids, and so on….

By the end of each topic breakdown, parents will hopefully realize they aren’t alone in their struggles and that the craziness all parents go through is actually quite funny when it’s looked at in the right light. After all, the mission of the show is to help parents laugh when they want to cry.

Dad Stereotypes Versus Reality with Simon Holland

by Chris Cate

This week on Breaking Down Parenting: A ParentNormal Podcast, I’m joined by the funniest dad on social media, Simon Holland, to break down dad stereotypes versus reality.

In our conversation, we discuss rival dads, how the role of a dad has progressed since the 1950’s and what happens when dads try to be cool. We also break down some of Simon’s (@simoncholland) most popular tweets, such as:

Accidentally played dad instead of dead when I encountered a bear and now it can ride a bike without training wheels.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) February 11, 2015

I accidentally said skrt when I meant to say yeet in front of my daughter’s friends and they went sicko mode making fun of me. I’m afraid I’m out of the squad.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) June 5, 2019

We keep a potato masher in a drawer because sometimes it’s fun to not be able to open that drawer.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) August 15, 2017

Million dollar idea:
Dinosaur chicken nuggets that may cause drowsiness.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) November 6, 2015

We also talk about some of Simon’s tweets about rival dads such as:

A rival dad mentioned he was up at 6:00 this morning so I told him it must be nice to get to sleep in on a weekday.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) October 18, 2019

Gave a rival dad a “how to grill” book right in front of a bunch of people.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) June 13, 2019

Asked a rival dad how much it costs these days to pay someone else to change their oil.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) October 3, 2019

Asked a rival dad what playing Madden on rookie mode was like in front of a bunch of other dads.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) October 10, 2019

One time I told a rival dad that the air pressure looked low in one of his tires right in front of a group of people.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) June 9, 2019

You know you’ve gone full dad when you realize you are explaining how water towers work to an entire car full of kids who don’t care.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) August 14, 2018

One time a rival dad challenged me to a duel so we raced to see who could move a car seat from one car to another car the fastest.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) September 1, 2016

Made it to that level of dad where I’m excited about vacation because I can turn up the thermostat while we’re gone and save some money.

— Simon Holland (@simoncholland) June 18, 2019

Sick Kids with Gila Pfeffer

by Chris Cate

This week we’re talking about (cough, cough) sick kids. Just when you think being a parent can’t get more difficult, kids start sneezing in your face and throwing up in your lap. Yet, somehow their sicknesses make us want to hold them closer.

Joining me to break down the topic of sick kids is Gila Pfeffer who has plenty of experience taking care of sick kids (she has four teenagers!). In our conversation, we talk about daycare germs, kids vomiting in public, how sicknesses change as kids get older, why parents have no fear of getting sick and much more. Gila also talks about moving her family from the United States to London and about the differences in health care in both places.

This is also a special episode for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Gila is a breast cancer pre-vivor and survivor. In this episode, Gila talks about her unique story and how it impacted her family. She also shares the advice she gives to other women and families impacted by breast cancer.

You can learn more about Gila on her website at the-mom-who-knew-too-much.com. You can also find her on Facebook and Instagram.

Halloween Made Special with Homemade Costumes & Laffy Taffy

by Chris Cate

Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year. For all of the talk about tricks, it is almost 100% treats.

Candy is the most popular treat, but the greatest treat for me is spending time with my kids. I love encouraging their imagination when they choose what to be for Halloween. I love walking through the neighborhood trick-or-treating with them. And I love eating their candy when they go to sleep. (Shhh. Don’t tell them.)

This year, my daughter and I did something we’ve never done before. We made homemade costumes. Not only was it fun, it also provided great family time for us. The idea was sparked by a campaign this year by Laffy Taffy that encourages families to get crafty and make costumes with supplies found around the house.

We chose to make spelling bee costumes and all we needed was:

  • Yellow Shirt
  • Black Pants
  • Black Fabric Paint
  • Black Marker
  • Cardboard
  • Yellow Yarn

You can watch how we did it here:
